In&Out
The city possesses a dual nature. For instance, my hometown, Shanghai, as an international metropolis, features old alleyways nestled between towering skyscrapers.
To learn about the history and customs of Shanghai, I asked my grandmother about the history of the alleyways and explored them. Unchanged and somewhat dilapidated, the alleyways felt like a different world. I captured the alleyway life with a film camera, revealing a plethora of scenes brimming with vibrant colors. In contrast, the cold urban life represented by salarymen lacked color and was portrayed in black and white.
In rapidly developing cities, high-rise buildings with similar designs are ubiquitous. The older parts are concealed. The act of tearing apart represents both dissatisfaction with the cold urban environment and a desire to inquire about the past.
When you tear apart the surface of the city, the diverse and colorful aspects hidden beneath become visible.
On one page, I photographed on the same subject.
The theme of this page is the people of the city.
